Poland – A Patriotic Dream

by Christopher H. Busing
31 August 2009

Today is the 70th anniversary of the beginning of WWII. On the morning of 1 Sept 1939 at 4:40 AM, massive German Armies crossed the Polish border with an attack that was based on a false flag type pretext for invasion, of dressing up dead bodies in Polish Army uniforms to make it look like Polish terrorizing the German border.

Before 1939, Poland was enjoying exactly 20 years of freedom in experimentation with a new state governmental apparatus and progressive social programs, after exactly 100 years of occupation by Russian and Austro-Hungarian Empires.  Called “The Good Time” by Poles, and under the leadership of Marshall Pilsudski, a truly benevolent dictator, if you can imagine that, and the equivalent of our George Washington, Poland set up a democratic government in 1920 with a structure and rights for citizens patterned after the American.  Pilsudski, the hero of the Polish struggle for independence against the Soviets a couple of years before, envisioned a multi-ethnic state with freedom and tolerance for all groups; Jews being the main contention for his opponents.  Also, a gold standard for the currency was adopted, unlike its dictatorship neighbors; the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany who were both controlled by European banking institutions with  fiat money systems.

Here are a few stark facts about Polish defense against German and Soviet invasions of 1939 of which most Americans are unaware.  Contrary to popular belief, Polish cavalry did not charge German tanks.  That was German wartime propaganda to make the Poles look stupid before the world, but such stories seemed to make pretty good fare for curriculum in American higher education.  Polish armies did consist of cavalry, which were the elite of the elite of all services in the army.  Against highly mechanized German divisions, Polish cavalry fought* in no less than 16 engagements, all of which were victories for the “Uwani”, (Polish cavalry) except for one.

*mostly dismounted, a tactic pioneered by Confederate raiders in the American Civil War

Poland capitulated to the massive invading armies of the Soviets from one side and the Germans from the other, in four short weeks, largely because Poland was a poor farming nation up against industrial giants, and the flat Polish terrain was difficult to defend. Compare this to the capitulation to Germany of the armies of industrialized nations, Britain and France, in almost the same amount of time, a year later when Germany attacked west.

Mistakes were made before the German attack, in Polish armies not mobilizing in time due to insistence from British leaders that mobilization would unnecessarily goad the Germans into war. (which the Nazi’s were planning all along anyway)

The failure to mobilize caused valuable, top secret anti-tank ammunition not to be delivered to the front on time.

Soldiers called up late from the reserves, on their way to army depots, watched battles in the field, out of the windows of commuter trains.

Poland caused more damage to German armies in the initial invasion by Germany, than any other country invaded by Germany, and Polish resistance caused more damage to occupying German armies than any other country occupied by Germany.

Poland was one of the only, of the numerous countries invaded by the Germans in WWII, whose government and people did not collaborate with the Nazis or contribute an SS division to the German war machine.

Although Poland was completely overrun by German and Soviet forces in 1939, there was no surrender and surviving Polish military units were evacuated to fight with European armies against the Germans, that they would speed the eventual liberation of their country.  Polish fighter pilots flew in the Battle of Britain, but British historians don’t like to make light of the fact that the number one scoring air force unit (303 Squadron) against the German Air Force, were Poles flying British Spitfires.

At the Battle of Monte Cassino Italy, US and British troops could not penetrate the well defended German positions, until Polish units gave their try and rousted the Germans.

Polish broke the German secret “Enigma” code which aided the allies immensely in beating the Germans, although historical accounts up until now, has British intelligence taking the credit.

In 1944 after the destruction of the Warsaw ghetto, the City of Warsaw, in a general uprising (pronounced, Warshava Pofstanya and subject of the YouTubes)  attempted to aid Soviet Armies which were now moving west to defeat the Germans.  Instead of coming to the aid of the Polish resistance, the Soviet high command made a decision to stop their advance, in order to let the SS occupiers of the city decimate the cream of polish leadership, in order that the Soviets would not have to contend with these freedom fighters after the war, as Stalin and the communists were planning on the enslavement of Poland thereafter.  The Soviets let the Germans do their dirty work.

In several short weeks the SS detonated every building in the ancient city of Warsaw to root out all tenacious resistance holed up in cellars, sewers and the badly damaged shells of buildings.  As a result Warsaw became the most thoroughly destroyed city of WWII.  250,000 - 300,000 resistance fighters; men women and children, died in Warsaw; more people than atom bombs killed in Nagasaki and Hiroshima combined.  A classroom of Polish school girls ran to plunge themselves on German tanks with gasoline bombs.  One incident of atrocity by the SS against Warsaw families herded into the streets, was apparently so egregious to even the Nazi’s that the commander, Dirlwanger himself was tried and executed for war crimes, by the Nazis!

After WWII, in which Poland lost more of her people than any other country in the world, per capita, Poland was ready to fight again; this time the Soviets, who they knew would enslave their country after the Germans were ousted.  The Polish resistance awaited Patton’s Third Army to liberate them from the already occupying Soviets, as they knew that General Patton was the most aggressive anti-Soviet, anti-communist general in the American army, and polish home army somehow thought that Patton was going to have his way, with a liberation of Poland and eastern Europe.  The Poles awaited, but Patton never came.  President Roosevelt had already cut a deal with Stalin, which would consign Poland to slavery, until the Solidarity movement of the early 1980’s, in which Poland was the first of the countries under the USSR’s satellite rule, to free themselves once again.
